A luxurious home in the Napa Valley

Gary Friedman, CEO of Restoration Hardware is selling his luxurious home in St Helena, Napa Valley.  He and his design team have meticulously redesigned and decorated the home with RH products.  It is nothing short of spectacular with six bedrooms, media room, integrated kitchen, lounge and dining, a gym, yoga space and massage table overlooking the vineyards. The grey colour palette is very sophisticated, the furnishings are classic and timeless.

These eight-foot black gates are complete with elegant brass hardware, and make for a dramatic entrance to the estate.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Friedman paid $5.9 million for the house in 2013. He initially planned on turning it into a private getaway for himself, but then decided to remodel and resell it. The whole process took two years to complete, and the results — like this majestic entry courtyard —are stunning.

As part of the renovation process, Friedman added two more bedrooms to the house, coming to a grand total of six. The master boasts a beautiful four-post bed, while the guest rooms are "almost mirror-images of each other," so that no guests end up feeling slighted by room allocations.

The house's four-and-a-half baths also showcase the sophisticated innovation that Restoration Hardware is famous for.

Without a doubt, the pool is one of the house's most impressive features. Flanked by tall palms, trimmed boxwood hedges, and an assortment of lounges and daybeds, it stretches between the main house and the free-standing guesthouse.

How to make an Entrance

First impressions count.  Your entrance way and foyer provide the first impression that people will have of you and your home. It should give your visitors a glimpse of what to further expect, so a consistent theme through out is best. After all, it is the first room you see and the last.

Glass and metal doors. Love the shutters!:

Greeting visitors in the entrance hall is a bronze elephant sculpture atop a 19th-century English country table from Yew Tree House Antiques; on the wall is a series of Richard Diebenkorn lithographs.:

Home Design and Style

I recently discovered that Ellen DeGeneres has a great eye for design, when I  purchased her new interiors book, simply called ‘Home’. It showcases the many homes that she has purchased and renovated in California over the years. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful images with exquisite architecture, furnishings and art.

A classic home Library

If you are lucky enough to have the space, you can never go wrong with a dedicated home library. I have a small library of my own and it’s such a wonderful escape.

To give the library in his Los Angeles house "a cozy atmosphere," Mark D. Sikes covered the walls in Peter Dunham's Samarkand paisley. The center table is draped in Cowtan & Tout's Rapallo ikat. Built-in bookcases hold a 20-year collection of magazines.

Classical design in Europe

Europe has the most magnificent and delightful buildings with formally manicured gardens.  My favourite landscaping style is the sculptured green garden. I greatly admire their classical design traditions.

A luxurious bathroom

This European style bathroom is absolutely breathtaking.  I personally love the aged finish on the walls and mirror. The rich burgundy velvet curtains and ottoman make the room feel very luxurious (you can never go wrong with this classic shade and its one of my favourite decorating hues). The dual claw foot bathtubs are very appealing and the room would not be complete without an oversize antique chandelier.  I can’t imagine ever wanting to leave this room!

Dramatic interiors

The trend for using dark colours such as navy, charcoal or black in interior and exterior spaces has really gathered pace.  There are some wonderful examples around of how a dark colour palette can add drama and sophistication to your home.

A passion for French style interiors

French style interiors have always been a passion of mine.  The kitchen below is just sublime.   I just love the soothing neutral colour palette and rustic yet sophisticated feel, it’s timeless.  And the oversize chandelier really completes the room.

The perfect armchair

I’m on the hunt for the perfect armchair for a client and came across this beautiful timeless piece from Restoration Hardware.  Wondrously comfortable, this button-tufted design would stand proud in any living space.  I especially love the French-inspired style with upholstery in sand Belgian linen and hardware in a walnut finish.
